Even if you aren’t a veteran to the health food world, you have probably heard about bone broth. Cooking with bone broth is not a new thing; people have been using it for centuries. Recently, however, many people have been digging in a little deeper to see just how good for you bone broth is. Come to find out, there are countless vitamins and minerals in bone broth with benefits anywhere from boosting immune system to reducing cellulite.
My personal journey with bone broth started a few months ago. That was when I realized I needed to make a change to better myself. I wanted to start living a healthier lifestyle for myself and for my family. I hated being the mom that was always tired and ate $5 meals from fast food just because it was “fast.” Yeah, a fast way to throw your health away! Anyway, I figured the first place to start was a detox. I wanted to get rid of the toxins that were in my body.
That’s when I started searching around for a good detox treatment. My sister-in-law, who’s a nurse and health food junkie, mentioned bone broth when I asked her opinion on detoxes. After trying a couple that didn’t seem to suit me (way too many trips to the bathroom), I figured I’d give it a shot, heck I had nothing to lose.
I decided to try making it at home first. To my surprise, since the most tasty thing I can make is cereal, it wasn’t too bad! I made enough to drink it every day for a week. The second or third week was when I really started noticing the changes in my body.
As a mom, the first thing I noticed was the energy it gave me. Having the energy to run around and play with three boys — one 9, one 7, and one 4 — is priceless. The other major difference I noticed was with my skin. I admit, after cooking (trying to at least), cleaning, picking the kids up from school, then shuttling them to and from sports and activities, taking care of my skin was the last thing on my mind. So, it was a pleasant surprise when I started noticing clearer, more radiant skin. I did a little research and turns out the reason why is because of the collagen and gelatin that bone broth has in it. Who would have guessed?
I admit, drinking it straight every day does get a little old. That’s why I started adding it to my recipes at home. To my surprise, it tastes really good. Like, good enough for my husband and kids to eat it, which is a nearly impossible task. It has actually made me enjoy cooking again.
Now that I just finished month 3 using bone broth in some way every day, I have noticed changes that I didn’t think possible. I already touched on how amazing my skin has been looking these days, but I want to shout it out again because I can’t say it enough. It has boosted my confidence so much. I don’t find myself avoiding the camera anymore. Actually, my selfie game is strong! People are actually surprised when I say I’m 34. They say I look about 25!
Another huge outer appearance win is the weight that I’ve been losing. It has given me so much more energy for my workouts. The electrolytes have been helping me bounce back and I enjoy working out for the first time in forever. I’ve also been finding amazing new recipes to try and, although they’re healthy, they taste really good. Total win, win! It has been cutting back my drive-thru meals almost entirely. I just feel overall healthier losing the weight naturally. This mama likes yummy food so those crash diets just don’t cut it. And instead of cramming diet pills down my throat or drinking shakes that taste like chalk, I get to eat something I actually enjoy.
The changes in my outer appearance have been amazing, but the things that have changed on the inside have been incredible. There are many vitamins and nutrients in bone broth that support immune health. I haven’t been getting sick as often which I love. Also, the relationship I have with my kids and husband has grown. Now, I know some of you would ask, “how could consuming something help your relationship?” I know, it sounds nuts, but let me explain…
Thanks to the electrolytes and protein in the bone broth, I have a lot more energy to do the things that my kids like to do. All of my boys, including my husband, are outdoorsy. Between the biking, climbing, swimming, hiking, skateboarding — the list goes on and on — and that’s just the summer months. With the weight loss and the energy, I’ve found that I like to do a lot of these things too! Minus the skateboarding, of course. I can keep up with them, and we enjoy doing all these things as a family. Another thing, I might add, is that I have been sleeping better at night. That makes for a happier mom and wife in the morning. Plus, the extra confidence in myself and appearance, combined with the added energy, have certainly made “bedroom time” with my hubby more frequent and enjoyable! 🙂
Overall, drinking and cooking with bone broth has dramatically improved my lifestyle and helped me become a happier person. My family loves it too! I was looking for a kickstart to healthier habits and I got more than what I was looking for. The best part is, every day is different. I’m not stuck eating or drinking one thing, and I love the variety. I’ve also tried buying my bone broth instead of making it. It’s perfect for the busy lifestyle that I have.
The question I get the most from people who are just starting out is what to do if they don’t like the flavor of bone broth. My biggest suggestion is to try different recipes. There are great tasting dishes that can hide the taste of bone broth if you don’t prefer the flavor. There’s also various flavors of bone broth that you can buy online. I love the variety of flavor choices when I want to mix things up a bit.
I suggest bone broth to every person that is wanting to improve their lifestyle and health. It’s an easy thing to try and there is zero risk, but a lot to gain!
